“Hiding in Plain Sight.”

Vernon Howard’s ideas and teachings have changed my life! Here is just one little example.

About 4 years ago, I purchased a fig tree and planted it in my backyard. This small tree has produced figs every year since, and both my wife and I can’t wait for the harvest time. We go out every day to see if any new figs have ripened. The birds also can’t wait, and so we share the bounty. Who will get there first, the birds or us?

The other morning, I went out to check for any new ripe figs. I then heard my wife, who was still inside our house, say through the screen door, “They hide in plain sight.” This rang so true as I revisited a side of the tree I had already checked and found nothing on my 1st viewing. With the thought, “They hide in plain sight” in mind, I found 3 ripe beauties waiting to be picked.

They appeared to magically become visible. This incident reminded me of the inner life. We hear a true spiritual principle, and only after returning and pondering it’s deeper meaning is the meaning revealed to us. The ordinary mind can’t comprehend spiritual truths. It is a necessary tool is go through life, but it is a limited tool. The world teaches and uses the mind for everything.

Can you imagine using a regular screwdriver to remove a stubborn nut on a bolt? Good luck. Only a nut tries to remove a nut with a regular screwdriver.

Newsflash! The secret life is hiding in plain sight, and is available to those who will slow down and look. It does not matter how far away from sanity you have wandered, by turning in the right direction all can be different.

  1. There are so many lessons in this story, Here’s one. “When you are thinking, you are not seeing.”

  2. The screwdriver example is so apt. Having once successfully used a screwdriver to remove a screw, I have become hypnotised by it and try and use it to eat my cornflakes and comb my hair!

This post reminds me to come back to silence and stillness, no matter how long I have been away. ‘The secret life is hiding in plain sight, and is available to those who will slow down and look’.
