“In just a few seconds you will hear (read) a marvelous message that will set you free. You will never again be the same person. All will be new and bright. Here is the magnificent message. You need never again pretend to be a non-angry person. There! You are free! It is too late for evil forces to keep this from you. It’s power is yours forever. You have total permission and encouragement to abandon all pretense. Feel better already? Wait for the wonders of tomorrow!” -Vernon Howard
Taught from day one to pretend about everything. Our parents taught us this, but couldn’t help it, they did not know any better and did the best they could. None the less, appearances were placed at the top of the list of our goals. I remember going to church Sunday morning with the whole family and after, somethings which we did quite often, was to stop off at the local donut bakery and we all got to pick one donut for ourselves. This was a challenge for there were so many to choose from. Topped with chocolate, maple frosting, vanilla and sprinkled with a variety of additions. Which was great, but some Sunday’s we would witness my dad getting angry on the way home because all the kids wanted to stop for donuts and he did not. The loud chorus of “Donuts, Donuts we want donuts” came to a sudden halt as my dad even louder voice yelled; “Quiet! We are not getting donuts!!! We all pretended my dad was not angry…the station wagon got utterly quiet and it was not the good quiet. What would have been different if my dad had read “Liberty Now” and not polluted the atmosphere? Placing us all under fear. My dad didn’t know it, but he was teaching the children that anger was a solution , which it is not. Today is new. We can break the chain and see anger for what it is…unhealthy and unnecessary.
