From the Mystic Path to Cosmic Power, by Vernon Howard, here are
two simple yet profoundly great ways to change your day for the better — and the only requirement… putting your attention on them and noticing everything:

gardenTwenty Special Secrets

Here are two:

1. When two people meet, the prize always goes to the one with the most self-insight. He will be calmer, more confident, more at ease with the other.

2. Never permit the behavior of other people tell you how to feel.

Inner Life Exercise

Come Awake in the grocery line

When going through the cashier line to pay for your groceries, Come Wide Awake. Instead of seeking out the shortest line so you can get on with the next thing to hurry through, you will deliberately get in the longest line.
Put your attention on what is going on inside of you as voices scream in protest. Hold steady to your aim. Become aware that there is a cashier and other customers in front of and in back of you. Notice there are others still shopping — take in all that is happening around you. This exercise can be very profitable for an inner-life student.
You might notice the cashier is irritated, or is blabbing away or whatever. Your aim is to stay awake as you place your items on the conveyor belt and to have your payment means ready and in hand so you’re not fumbling around while everyone is waiting for you.

You can find your own variations of this self-enriching exercise, but you will see clearly that up till now, you have been wasting a great opportunity to grow. You will understand more deeply Vernon Howard’s words, “Life is not a race for you to win, but a school for your higher education.”

  1. Graciously, I have found that whenever I come back to myself, and am aware of my body and surroundings, there is less of the worry and frustration that had previously engulfed my life. Truly, this is the treasure of a lifetime, and the more I value it, the more force is available for awakening. Thank Heaven for Heaven!

  2. ‘Never permit the behaviour of other people to tell you how to feel’ What a beautiful and valuable principle, I have gone through my whole day being told how to feel without realising it. Thank you Vernon for this principle that wakes me up to the fact I fritter away my life being told how to feel without even knowing it.

  3. The two special secrets go hand in hand; if I can be aware that when meeting someone I am nervous and concerned about what they think of me, it puts me in a Higher State where I can be calmer and more at ease. It seems contradictory, but if you want to feel relaxed and peaceful, you have to see and experience how nervous and agitated you really are first!

  4. I noticed that when there are people who wait until the last moment to take out their checkbooks or credit cards and I note the comments that my mind is making.

I like to stabilize myself, bringing my mind back to my body. I become aware of my feet and how all four corners of each foot are in contact with the floor I adjust my posture so that what the people in front of me are doing is not telegraphed to my posture.

  5. Let’s see… “calmer” -yes I like that. “More confident”… -another yes. and “more at ease”… -three yeses. When you work on your nature you always get the prize (even if it doesn’t feel like a prize at the time).
